Biography

"Music is the companion of joy and a medicine for suffering." -Johannes Vermeer

Cali Watson's musical journey began at age 4 when she began piano lessons at the studio of Janae Nilsson. Since then, Cali has had the opportunity to participate in annual studio recitals, collaborate with other artists through accompanying and various ensemble works, and discover her love of composing. In addition to her piano adventures, Cali also enjoys playing the violin. She has been concertmaster and/or section leader of several orchestras over the past 3 years. Cali loves to embrace different musical styles and genres and considers herself a Celtic music enthusiast. Cali has been teaching piano and violin for 3 years and loves sharing music with others. Teaching Philosophy: Music is a universal language. Every human on Earth has the ability and potential to play, understand, and feel music. My purpose as a piano teacher is to make music and piano more readily available to anyone and everyone and help people discover and achieve their musical aspirations. In this studio we will learn about music history, theory, technique, composition, improvisation, and we will play a variety of repertoire. In addition to playing the piano, I am passionate about the concept of a growth mindset: The belief that abilities can be developed and improved through dedication and learning. In my life, I've found that the things that require effort and dedication often have the sweetest rewards. One of the best parts about making music is that while it requires persistent hard work, it is also fun and so fulfilling! I want to help people understand their potential and work towards it. As a teacher, I will support students by helping with goal planning, practice, and reflection so they can become the best they can be. I feel that patience, communication, and willingness to learn are essential in any teaching environment. As I teach I will continue to learn and improve. In many ways teachers and students embark on a learning journey together. I will always be open about progress and answering questions of students and/or parents, and am constantly looking for ways to improve: feedback is welcome! I hope to create an environment of friendship and a passion for learning new things in this studio. Respect for both students and teacher is essential. Ultimately my goal as a teacher is to nurture a lifelong love of music, however that fits into a student's individual life! Music is a form of self expression and connection, and I hope to share that with as many people as possible.
