Playful Explorations Related to Dynamical Systems

Conference/Seminar

How would you approximate the square root of some random positive number? Start by guessing!

We will develop an algorithm, perhaps the exact one the Babylonians are credited for, and then explore iterative maps, Newton’s method, fixed points and an existence theorem.

This presentation is based on the first chapter of Dynamical Systems by Shlomo Sternberg (2010, Dover).

Andy Larsen, The Salt Lake Tribune, Math & Stats Colloquium

Special Event

Making data work: how to turn numbers into knowledge
As the Salt Lake Tribune data columnist, Andy Larsen's job is to turn the numbers in our world into insight for a general audience. So how do you best do that? Andy will describe how he chooses topics to cover, and the process of understanding those topics. Most important: he'll show how to present data in an intuitive way, in both graphics and words.
