Latinx is an emergent term Latin Americans and Americans of Latin American descent use to self-identify. Latinx embraces diversity in race, gender, sexuality, and creed. Latinx labors toward achieving equity for all, including those that don’t self-identify as Latinx.
Latinx artists draw on visual traditions found in Latin American art. Latinx artists communicate the American experience. Their art engages issues like marginalization, migration, exploitation, exclusion, discrimination, and alienation. And everyone living in the Western Hemisphere shares varying aspects of this American experience.
"Road Trip" Art Exhibit

Photographs by Dave Hanson, a local businessman and award-winning artist, will be on exhibit at Gallery East during the month of February. The exhibit, entitled “Road Trip,” will be on view from February 2nd – March 1st in the Central Instruction Building (CIB) on the campus of Utah State University Eastern.
Gallery East is free and open to the public during the academic year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed weekends and holidays.
Tanner Symposium on Women & America's Vietnam War
Panel Discussion/Presentation
The United States formally ended its participation in what it called the Vietnam War fifty years ago. Many are still living with the legacies of this conflict, and one of the populations deeply affected by this devastating event were the women of many backgrounds who served militarily, had loved ones go to war, tended those affected by their direct participation in the war, protested its impact, or otherwise attempted to make sense of the war’s complex experiences and legacies. In connection with USU’s ongoing Bringing War Home Project that is collecting objects and stories from veterans and military families about modern war, we invite students, scholars, creative artists, and community members to share perspectives, especially from local history, in order to open conversations about the experiences of women who participated on multiple sides and sites of this conflict. We encourage interdisciplinary submissions from history, anthropology, material culture studies, archival studies, communications, literature, and the creative arts. This will be a live event, but there will be options for virtual participation for those who cannot attend in person.

Join Utah State University Campus Recreation and Outdoor Programs for our 3v3 Basketball Tournament Fundraiser. It'll be on March 2nd from 10am-2pm on the North Court in the Aggie Recreation Center. There will be 3 divisions including co-ed, women's, and men's, and is open to students and community members. Registration costs $10 if you register before Feb. 25 and then will be $15 after. All funds will go towards the spring Nepal Trekking and Water Service Trip put on through Outdoor Programs and Youthlinc.

WATS Spring Seminar | A tale of two salinities and their implications for resource management

Christine Rumsey is a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Utah Water Science Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Since joining the USGS in 2014, she has worked on projects in the Upper Colorado River Basin related to groundwater-discharge to streams, salinity transport, trends assessments, and trend attribution. Her other main area of focus is Great Salt Lake, where she’s involved with building understanding of water quality, nutrient cycling, and changing salinity.

The Springboard to Action! Series events are yearly workshops sponsored by Empowering Teaching Excellence in the Office of the Provost. These workshops are designed for USU instructors to dedicate the day and implement a practice in their teaching that they had been planning on doing. Each Springboard workshop has a different theme. This year's Springboard to Action Series event is on building a better syllabus starting from picking your IDEA objectives to unmasking the hidden syllabus. Participants will be presented with several short ignition ideas by facilitators, participate in breakouts, evaluate and make changes to their syllabus, and receive feedback from their group and designated facilitator.

Correspondence Networks in Early Modern Europe: Jesuits in Action

Before the development of regular modern postal systems (not to mention emails), letter-writing could be a precarious method of communication. There was plenty of opportunity for letters to get lost or intercepted or arrive too late and cause confusion, conflict, or misunderstanding. In the sixteenth century, the Society of Jesus, the largest of the Catholic religious orders, was already a worldwide organization operating in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. The global reach of the Society meant that it had to develop an efficient correspondence network, with its central hub in Rome. In this talk, Prof. Houliston will give examples from the exchange of letters between the superior general of the Society, Claudio Acquaviva, and the leader of the English Jesuits during the reign of Elizabeth I, Robert Persons.

Entrepreneur Leadership Series: Brent Brown

Brent Brown was born in Newport Beach, California, and moved to Mapleton, Utah when he was six years old. He graduated from Brighton High School in 1977. Though he didn't attend college, Brent has been passionate about supporting education with significant contributions to UVU, Provo School District, and several other educational causes including his service on the Utah State Board of Regents.
Having spent his youth as a lead guitarist in a professional rock band, Brent opened for several large acts including ZZ Top, and doing a record. He then chose to serve a two-year mission in England for his church. Brent began his career in the auto dealership industry in 1984. By 1987, he was managing a group of auto dealerships and in 1992, became part owner of the Toyota dealership in Orem, Utah and ultimately became the sole owner of what is now known as Brent Brown Toyota in 1999.
The dealership was Utah's largest volume new car dealership in 2016, outselling every dealership of every brand. The dealership was also recognized in early 2017 for being the #1 Metro Toyota dealership in the United States in customer retention, Toyota's measure for loyal customers who purchase again and again from the same dealer. The dealership was also an eight-time winner of Toyota's prestigious President's Award, Toyota's highest recognition for a well-run, customer-focused dealership, and was voted "Utah County's Favorite New Car Dealer" in 2017 for the fourth year in a row by readers of Utah Valley Magazine.

Madsen (Founding Director of the Utah Women & Leadership Project at Utah State University) will co-moderate this experience with Becca Kearl (Executive Director of Living Room Conversations) to provide space for anyone who joins to meet in small group to discuss women in the Utah society.

This is an overall contest that covers skills and knowledge gained by participating in all aspects of the Family Consumer Science project. The first part is an identification of 3 areas: Clothing & Sewing, Foods & Cooking Interior Design & Home Repairs. Then take a 25-question quiz on all the definitions and for the three identification area study materials, and finally, as a team, you give a 5-minute oral presentation from a selected life skill assessment topics. This is a super fun contest and we hope you all participate in these contests.

Come spend an evening snowshoeing under the glow of a full moon. Be sure to dress warm for the cooler temperatures after dark. No snowshoeing experience is necessary, beginners are most welcome. Trans/Nonbinary Allies on Campus aims to increase awareness and understanding of our trans/nonbinary community and further understand specific trans/nonbinary issues while training participants to stand with, and advocate for trans/nonbinary individuals. Participants will gain a basic understanding of sex, sexuality, and gender and how these concepts perpetuate microaggressions, discrimination policies, and daily biases. Prepare to dispel some common myths, laugh, and leave with the understanding that there is much work to be done in our community and you are part of the solution. Climate Change and a Shrinking Great Salt Lake

Years of drought, climate change and water diversions have left Great Salt Lake in a precarious position. In November 2022 the lake hit a historic low elevation, but after a record breaking winter snowpack in 2023, there is hope that the lake can rebound. Now, just over a year later, learn how the biology of Great Salt Lake is doing and what lies ahead for this troubled, but resilient body of water. USU Be Well and Extension professor, Gabi Murza, present a lunch and learn on tips to prevent injuries while gardening. Whether you garden for work or fun, you may have experienced aches and pains afterwards that went away quickly or persisted for some time. In this session, you’ll learn how to prevent injury and minimize pain/soreness by using best practices for gardening, practicing proper posture and use of tools, and incorporating stretches into your gardening routine. Even though it’s a virtual session, you’ll be encouraged to follow along with videos showing these movements, so wear comfortable shoes! *Presentation will be recorded. Close out Women’s History Month and join us as conductor Anna Rakitina and violinist William Hagen make their debut on our stage. LAEP Speaker Series: Todd Johnson

Landscape Architecture’s Dimensions Speaker Bio: Todd Johnson was born in Willmar, Minnesota in 1952 into a family with two older brothers. His oldest brother Craig taught landscape architecture at USU for 42 years and suggested that Todd consider becoming a landscape architect. Todd received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning degree from USU in 1976. After working in Calgary Alberta for four years, he moved to Boston and received a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Harvard University. In 1984 Todd co-founded the firm Civitas with USU alum and classmates Mark Johnson and Ann Mullins. After ten years at Civitas Todd joined Design Workshop/Denver, becoming a partner, and practicing there until 2013. Teaching at Utah State has been Todd’s professional passion for the past ten years. Todd has two grown children Natalie and Sam, and a grandson named Raphael.

Beginner Backcountry Ski Tour

Come grab some backcountry turns with us! We will venture into the Bear River backcountry to seek out snow that you can't get to on a ski lift. Learn some of the basics of backcountry travel and safety. No backcountry experience is required but you must be comfortable riding double blue to black diamond resort terrain. Participants must be prepared for strenuous hiking. Backcountry touring skis or splitboard with skins are required and available to rent for an additional $10+tax for trip participants. NO SNOWSHOES. Trip cost includes transportation, avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and student leadership.
