Dave Scholz Named Utah State Athletics Strength and Conditioning Coach

Utah State University senior associate athletics director/head trainer Dale Mildenberger announced Tuesday that Dave Scholz has been named head strength and conditioning coach and will begin his duties at USU immediately. Scholz replaces Evan Simon who accepted a similar position at the University of Wisconsin.

“Dave has a tremendous desire to be here at Utah State University and is very qualified to be the head strength and conditioning coach,” said Mildenberger. “He gave up a chance to be associated with a potential Super Bowl Champion team to be here this week and that shows a great passion for this position. He received his master’s degree from USU and worked three years here as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, and we are excited to have him back.”

Scholz comes to Utah State after spending the past year in the National Football League as a strength, nutrition and conditioning assistant with the San Francisco 49ers. In his position, Scholz was responsible for the programming for quarterbacks and kickers as well as all the nutritional aspects of the team, including meal planning. Scholz spent the 2011 season as the 49ers strength and conditioning intern.

“I’m extremely excited and honored to be named the head strength and conditioning coach at Utah State University,” said Scholz. “I have great memories and learned a lot from when I was here before. I’m very familiar with a lot of the coaches on staff and the student-athletes, and I’m very grateful to the USU administration, including Athletics Director Scott Barnes, for the opportunity.”

Prior to joining the 49ers, Scholz served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Utah State for three years (2008-10), where he assisted in all matters of football and served as the head of sports nutrition. He also was the lead strength coach for softball and volleyball.

From 2006-08, Scholz was a graduate assistant at Utah State, where he worked alongside current 49ers head strength and conditioning coach Mark Uyeyama. During the summer of 2006, Scholz was a strength and conditioning intern at Arizona State.

Scholz has also earned his CSCS Certification from the NSCA, Precision Nutrition Certification, ISSA Sports Nutrition Certification and BioSignature Modulation.

Scholz, who played football at Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 2002-03, was also a national level powerlifter at the 275-pound class. He earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise fitness from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and went on to earn his master’s degree from Utah State University in health, physical education and recreation.

Scholz is married to the former Kara Krupski.
