Andy Magee Joins Utah State Men's Tennis Coaching Staff

Utah State [University] head men’s tennis coach Clancy Shields announced Monday [June 9, 2014] the hiring of assistant coach Andy Magee.

Magee, a native of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., comes to Utah State after a season as a volunteer assistant coach at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. The Lions ended the 2013-14 season with a solid 14-10 overall record and were 4-6 in the West Coast Conference.

“I’m ecstatic for our program and personally, to bring in someone of Coach Magee’s caliber,” Shields said. “Andy’s background as a student-athlete is much different than most. He was a top ranked tennis player in the United States when he was 15, then decided to play football, where he was an all-state quarterback in California. Andy played football at UCLA, then played two years of tennis at Maryland. The ironic part to this hire is that Utah State was one of the first schools to offer Andy a scholarship in football, and now he is returning to help the Aggies in tennis.”

Magee spent his college tennis career playing at the University of Maryland. Before finishing his playing career in 2012, Magee excelled in doubles and singles play for the Terps. He played at all six singles positions and all three doubles positions for Maryland as one of the squad’s most versatile players. Before college, he was a member of 2004 USA Junior World Championship team and was ranked as high as No. 3 in the USTA as a junior player.

“Throughout the selection process, Andy demonstrated a rare combination of having an immense knowledge of the game, combined with an incredible passion for coaching,” said Shields. “I know Andy’s infectious personality will positively affect our players, the coaching staff and the Cache Valley community. We are thrilled to welcome Coach Magee to Utah State.”

The newest Aggie tennis coach was a two-sport athlete during his collegiate years. Magee began his college years as a football player at both Arizona State (2008-09) and UCLA (2009-10). He then made the transition back to the game of tennis and transferred to Maryland to complete his playing career.

“I cannot thank Clancy and the search committee enough for this life-changing opportunity, and I could not be more proud to call myself an Aggie,” Magee said. “I can’t wait to bring a Mountain West Conference title to Logan, Utah. Utah State has a rich athletic tradition and a high standard, our team will uphold both of these and be successful men on the court, in the classroom and in the community.”

The Aggie men finished the season with nine wins, which is the most since the 2010-11 team posted 12 victories. Two freshmen led the team in wins, as Sebastian Schneider tallied 17 total wins on the year and Dennis Baumgartner posted 14 total wins. Junior Matt Sweet recorded 12 singles victories to round out the Aggies with double-digit wins. The Aggies protected home court, as well, ending the year with a .600 winning percentage at home.
