USU Names New Vice Provost
Utah State University’s Provost’s office has named Janet Anderson vice provost with a focus on academic, curricular and infrastructure issues that influence student retention and completion.
Anderson has been serving as the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences (CAAS) associate dean of academic programs for the past five years in addition to her role as a clinical professor in USU’s dietetics program. Anderson begins her new appointment Sept. 1.
USU Executive Vice President and Provost Noelle E. Cockett named Anderson as a member of her team because of her vast experience overseeing the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences’ student advisement, graduation and recruitment programs.
“Her experience makes her ideal for the role of vice provost,” Cockett said. “She is considered by all who know her as collaborative, and she has a ‘can do’ attitude — exactly the attributes we need in this critical position.”
Cockett explained that the responsibilities covered by the provost staff have expanded in the last academic year. Janis L. Boettinger, the vice provost covering academic and curriculum issues, is currently serving as the acting director of the USU Office of Global Engagement. In addition, the Provost’s office has increased its connection and collaboration with USU Student Services, focusing on student retention and degree completion across all USU campuses.
“This shift and expansion of responsibilities that are critical to student success led to the addition of Janet to the Provost’s office,” Cockett said.
During her time with CAAS, Anderson worked extensively with student recruitment and retention efforts. Under her leadership, the college’s Student Services Center grew extensively, providing student advising for all departments. In 2005, Anderson was named the college’s Teacher of the Year and received the university’s Eldon J. Gardner Teaching Award. She was the recipient of a United States Department of Agriculture Food and Agricultural Science Excellence in Teaching Award in 2007.
“It has been an absolute pleasure serving the great students, faculty and staff in CAAS over the past five years,” Anderson said. “The people there have made my job a joy. I am looking forward to new learning opportunities and serving a broader range of the USU community in the provost’s office.”
Kenneth White, dean of the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, said Anderson has been great to work with and that the college will miss her.
“I appreciate the tremendous service she has given to the college, especially to our students,” White said. “We all wish her well in her new position and are sure the university will benefit from her skills and insight.”
Brian Warnick will take over Anderson’s role, having been named associate dean for academic programs for the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences. He is an associate professor in the School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education.
