Ninety-two Student-Athletes Received Academic All-Mountain West Honors

The Mountain West Conference announced its spring all-academic teams Thursday [July 16] and Utah State [University] had 92 student-athletes recognized as part of a league-record 950 student-athletes who were honored.

Spring sports include baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

Of its 92 academic all-Mountain West selections from its spring sports, Utah State had 37 student-athletes from women's track honored, along with 26 from men's track, eight from women’s tennis, six from men’s golf, five from both men’s tennis and softball, four from women’s basketball and one from men’s basketball.

Utah State’s 92 academic honorees from its spring sports were the fourth-most in the league as New Mexico led the conference with 128 all-academic recipients, while Colorado State had 104 and Fresno State had 98, followed by USU’s 92. Boise State was fifth with 91 all-academic honors from its spring sports, followed by Nevada (80), UNLV (77), Wyoming (77), San Jose Staté (73), San Diego State (69) and Air Force (61).

Utah State also had the most individuals honored in women’s track and field (37), tied for first with the most honorees in men’s golf (6) and women’s tennis (8), ranked second in men’s track and field (26) and tied for the second most student-athletes honored in men’s tennis (5).

Senior Eric Shellhorn, who competes in cross country, and both indoor and outdoor track and field for Utah State, has now earned academic all-conference honors 10 times in his career. Fellow senior cross country/track athletes Tom Derr and Kade Jensen have now both earned academic all-conference honors seven times, while senior track athletes Nic Bowens, Laycee Elliott, Dan Mosman, Amanda Stoudt, Amber Thompson and Jacqueline Winterton all earned their sixth academic all-conference honor.

Of the 92 USU student-athletes to earn spring academic all-Mountain West honors, 58 are receiving the accolade for at least the second time.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

During the 2014-15 academic year, Utah State had a total of 153 student-athletes earn academic all-Mountain West honors.
