To honor Utah State University’s Year of the Arts, the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art (NEHMA) has teamed up with artists Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake to present the “Work in Progress” Mural Project. Originally conceived by Haworth, this community project has seen over two hundred participants create stencil portraits of more than 200 women considered catalysts for change in the arts, sciences and society. Blake then takes the portraits made by community members and creates a collage to add new sections to the ever-growing “Work in Progress” mural. Today it spans over 40 feet long.

Reproductions of the current mural will be on view in USU’s Merrill-Cazier Library’s lower level from January 16 to March 29. In addition, more than thirty faculty and students representing USU’s various colleges have proposed women from their fields and will help create portraits during a two-day workshop with Haworth and Blake on January 25 and 26. This workshop will result in new sections to the “Work in Progress” mural. In conclusion, Haworth and Blake will participate in a lecture held on at USU March 29.

“I am so excited for Utah State University faculty and students from every college to come together to create USU’s contribution to this important mural,” said Katie Lee-Koven, NEHMA executive director. “We are grateful to artists Jann Haworth and Liberty Blake for their interest in having USU participate in this community project and excited to partner with the USU Merrill-Cazier Library to present a reproduction of the full mural.”

The Mural Project has been organized for USU by the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art who is partnering with Merrill-Cazier Library on this Year of the Arts initiative. The “Work in Progress” mural can be viewed in the library’s lower level during open hours, which are currently Sunday noon-midnight, Monday through Thursday 7 a.m.-midnight, Friday 7 a.m.-7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Hours vary on holidays and during semester recess.
