Atmospheric Measurements

  1. Check out everything on the flux chamber sample checklist on the door of the trailer.
    • Check the data carefully.  Answer these questions:
      • Did the temperature in the trailer stay okay, or do you need to adjust the thermostat?
      • Did the flow change slightly, and did the flux change, with each change of the chamber? If not, why not?  Figure out why and solve the problem.
      • Are the flows and pressures decreasing over time?  This could be a sign that the filters on the chambers need to be replaced.
      • Is there anything unusual that needs checking out or repairing?
  2. Fill the big red gasoline tank
  3. Make sure both generators are still running and don't have a red light, which indicates the breaker tripped and the generator needs to be restarted.  If one stops, it is could be because it needs the oil to be topped off or changed.
  4. Do a calibration if it is on the schedule
    • A 3-point calibration should include a zero, one point in the range of the low methane laser, and one point in the range of the high methane laser.
    • A 5-point calibration should include a zero and two points in the range of each methane laser.
    • Record the result in the Excel calibration log and in Rspace.
  5. If it is on the schedule, collect VOC cans from one of the chambers:
    • For each 4-day chamber run, we want to collect:
      • two sets of cans on the chamber with the highest fluxes on two separate days
      • One set of cans on a different chamber that also has high fluxes.
    • To do this, you will need to:
      • put on a set of cans, connect them, open them, and label them. the name should be dmmmyyyy-SERIAL#-IN or -OUT.  for example, 10jan2018-15768-OUT.
      • Decide which chamber you need to collect the sample from.
        • You may need to look back through the data to see which chamber has the highest fluxes.
        • If someone has already collected cans from the highest flux chamber for this well, you will need to collect cans from the same chamber again.
        • If you are trying to collect cans from a different chamber that also has high fluxes, you can look through the data to choose one.
      • Look at which chamber is currently being sampled.  In the Public table, the Chamber1_on variable will be set to a 1 if chamber 1 is being sampled.
      • If the chamber currently being sampled isn't the one you want, or if the chamber currently being sampled IS the one you want, but the chamber has already been sampling for more than 25-28 minutes, you need to fast-forward the chamber cycling.
        • Do this by setting the MinForChamber variable in the Public table to 2.  This will cause it to switch between chambers every two minutes.
      • Once the chamber you want is sampling, change MinForChamber back to 60.
      • Wait until the chamber you want has sampled for 25-28 min, Check that the methane flux is relatively stable (that it isn't increasing or decreasing over time), then set the FillingCans variable in the Public table to 1.
      • Check that the flow rates on the fillingcans Alicat MFCs are approximately what are needed to fill a can in 30 min.  If the can fills faster or slower than 30 min, adjust the flow rate.
      • After 30 min, the can-filling Alicat MFCs will automatically shut off.
      • Close the cans, but their caps on, and put them away.
      • You don't need to fast forward the chamber switching again.  Just let it continue from the can you are currently on.
  6. Download the data to a CSV file
    • Put the CSV file in FieldSync\MobileLab\raw data\GSI Clay Basin 6 chamber.
    • Upload the CSV file to the Rspace entry you make for today.
  7. Record everything you did and found in Rspace each day.
    • Make a new entry in Rspace for each day.
      • For the first day when you set things up, you should use the normal MobileLab template.  You can do it in Microsoft Word and then upload to Rspace, or you can do it directly in Rspace using the  Template Seth made in Rspace
      • If you like, you can use the MobileLabQuckNote Template Seth made in Rspace for the log you make each day that you check on the trailer.
  8. If there were any problems that you weren't able to resolve, make a plan to get them resolved and execute it.
