Blood Battle USU vs. Weber State

Special Event

There is a severe blood shortage in the United States right now, due to disasters and the pandemic, which cancelled many blood drives and prevented donors from regular donations. Utah State and Weber State are going head to head in the name of addressing the blood shortage during Blood Battle 2021.

Each school has a goal of collecting 1,000 units of blood, which is an unprecedented aspiration! American Red Cross teams will be on hand from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day for a week so that donors can step up and help community members they may never meet.

Appointments are required this year, and no walk-ins will be taken. Go to redcrossblood.org and type ZIP code 84322 or the sponsor code BLEEDBLUE in the search box in the top right corner to make an appointment.

Many volunteers are also needed to staff the check-in and snack tables. Sign up for a shift or two by logging into AggiePulse, USU's service database, here: https://givepul.se/cmjix1.

Hybrid Applied Mathematics Seminar

Conference/Seminar

Talk Title: Solving Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow Problems with Reduced Order Models and Neural Networks

Speaker: Dr. Zilong Song Department of Math & Stat, USU

Abstract: The friction stir welding process can be modelled using a system of heat transfer and Navier-Stokes equations with a shear dependent viscosity. Finding numerical solutions of this system of nonlinear partial differential equations over a set of parameter space, however, is extremely time-consuming. Therefore, it is desirable to find a computationally efficient method that can be used to obtain an approximation of the solution with acceptable accuracy. In this talk, we present a reduced basis method for solving the parametrized coupled system of heat and Navier-Stokes equations using a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). In addition, we apply a machine learning algorithm based on an artificial neural network (ANN) to learn (approximately) the relationship between relevant parameters and the POD coefficients. Our computational experiments demonstrate that substantial speed-up can be achieved while maintaining reasonable accuracy.

Investigations of Turbulent Multiphase Flows Using Optical Measurement Techniques

Conference/Seminar

Small inertial particles in turbulence appear in a number of environmental flows such as dust, sand, rain, snow or sediment in the atmospheric boundary layer, in rivers, during deep-sea mining or on Mars. Particle dynamics, including accelerations and concentrations, depend (among other things) on gravity and inertia. In this talk I will present results of recent high-Reynolds-number experiments of inertial particles in turbulence which are performed in a turbulence box (Re? = 450) and an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel (Ret = 19,000). These results are of direct use in prediction and modeling of phenomena such as droplet growth in clouds, fall speed of snowflakes and particle concentrations in dust storms.

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, passive type of yoga that incorporates long holds and stretching designed for deep contemplation and mind-body awareness. Yin yoga promotes sensory awakening that melts away tension and stress, and is known to release repressed or stored emotions. A tried and true technique to experience fascia and connective tissue release, Yin yoga is also an excellent practice for beginners because it offers plenty of time to uncover the unique benefits of individual poses without worrying about tricky transitions.

Title: Sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification using novel physics-constrained machine learning

Speaker: Dr. Hamidreza Karbasian, Fields Institute, University of Toronto

Abstract:
A new physics-constrained data-driven approach is proposed for sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification of large-scale chaotic dynamical systems. Unlike conventional sensitivity analysis, this approach can solve the unsteady sensitivity function for PDE-constrained optimizations. In this new approach, high-dimensional governing equations, such as Navier-Stokes equations, from physical space are transformed into an unphysical space to develop a closure model in the form of a Reduced-Order Model (ROM). Subsequently, a new data sampling approach is proposed to build a data-driven approach for this framework. It is shown that the proposed approach can capture sensitivities for large-scale chaotic dynamical systems, where Finite Difference (FD) approximations fail ...

Many of these alumni seek opportunities to give back and offer a hand up to new Aggies following in their footsteps.

Fall Convocation celebrates this enduring legacy by recognizing outstanding student recipients of our graduate and undergraduate College of Science scholarships and awards, as well as the generous scholarship donors supporting these scholars in their endeavors. The annual gathering provides an opportunity for Aggies, from generation to generation, to share their stories, their challenges and their wisdom in warm fellowship.
