Brittany Shield's CAS Internship with the Salt Lake County Health Department

In the summers of 2019 & 2020, CAS trainee Brittany Shield interned with the Salt Lake County Health Department under the mentorship of Dr. Royal DeLegge. As an intern, Brittany's objective was to provide insight into public perceptions on climate change in Salt Lake County to assist in climate adaptation planning. Specifically, Brittany wanted to understand key concerns of residents, public perceptions of local climate change impacts, and policy support.

Brittany was able to build an implementation plan that identified key topics of public interest to integrate into SL County's Climate Adaptation Plan and provided a detailed protocol and sampling strategy for its implementation.

Brittany gained a skillset in remote collaboration, synthesis of academic writing for a county planner audience, and communication for a diverse group of stakeholders.
