In the summers of 2019 & 2020, CAS trainee Jacob Stuivenvolt Allen interned with NOAAs Climate Prediction Center (CPC). The purpose of the CPC is to produce climate and weather forecast products at scale.

North American weather is largely impacted by seasonal-scale climate patterns. The purpose of Jacob's internship was to improve operational prediction of North American winter climate with statistical and dynamic approaches.

Prediction is the first step towards climate adaptation. And preliminary assessments of Jacob's work demonstrated improved skill in statistical models for predicting winter climate.

Jacob gained a skillset in applied research (stepping off the ivory tower), python, statistics, forecast model fluency, and scientific methodology defense.
