Black History Month
February, 2026
February 10th, 11-1pm TSC International Lounge
Black History Month was officially established in February 1986, when Congress, through Senate Joint Resolution 74, designated the month as National Black (Afro American) History Month and authorized the President to issue an annual proclamation in its observance. This designation marked a national commitment to formally recognize Black history as an essential part of the American story.
The purpose of Black History Month is to make all Americans aware of the long struggle for freedom and equal opportunity endured by Black Americans, while also celebrating their many achievements across all fields—from science and the arts to politics, education, and religion. It provides Black Americans an opportunity to explore and honor their heritage and offers all Americans a fuller understanding of the profound contributions Black Americans have made to the nation. The American experience cannot be fully understood without acknowledging Black history and ensuring it holds its rightful place in education, scholarship, and our shared national memory.
