About This Degree

The Marriage and Family Therapy graduate program is a full-time, two year, in-person experience designed to prepare students for clinical careers in marriage and family therapy and is offered only at the Logan campus.

The Department of Human Development and Family Studies is housed in the College of Education and Human Services, which is in the top 2% ranked #1 in Utah and #32 in the Nation of all Graduate Schools and is #13 in the Nation for Total Research Dollars Generated.

The MFT program offers a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy (non-thesis), Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy (thesis) and a PhD in Human Development and Family Studies with a Marriage and Family Therapy specialization.

What You Will Learn

As they study human development and marital and family relations, students are provided with basic academic and initial clinical practice requirements for Utah state licensure as marriage and family therapists and for clinical membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. This program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) and qualifies students for intern-level licensure as marriage and family therapists in the state of Utah.

Admission Requirements

It is preferred that applicants have a foundation in the behavioral and social sciences. However, qualified students are regularly admitted from a variety of academic disciplines. Applicants without prior coursework in human development, family science, or related fields may be required to complete foundational prerequisites depending on their experience.

Application Requirements:

  • Complete the online application
  • Pay the $55 application fee Have a 3.0 or higher GPA on your last 60 semester or 90 quarter credits
  • Provide transcripts of all college/university credits
  • Provide three contacts for letters of recommendation
  • PhD applicants must also: Submit an academic writing sample of at least five double-spaced pages in length. Examples may include a class paper, literature review, undergraduate or master's thesis, or an in-progress or published scholarly manuscript.
