About This Degree

The master's degree in English offers students a rich classroom experience with mentors who are leaders in their fields.

The program allows students to take a variety of classes focusing on literature, creative writing, composition, and cultural studies, while simultaneously supporting specific projects and passions. We pride ourselves in our ability to professionalize students, support their research, and serve as the bridge to their future careers.

What You Will Learn

In our graduate program, students receive the kind of training necessary to prepare them for the professional world of academia as well as for any career that centers on communication, critical thinking, and collaboration. Students learn to ask good questions, organize evidence, make presentations, and engage with others in conversations about how we, as humans, make meaning in our world.

Specialization:

Students must choose an emphasis in one of the following areas

Literature, Culture, and Composition:

This specialization is for students who wish to do advanced work in the fields of literary criticism, composition, and rhetoric. The aim is to professionalize students, helping them to become scholars and teachers of English. Learn more on the program website.

Creative Writing:

This specialization allows students to do advanced work in creative writing, concentrating on poetry, fiction, and/or creative nonfiction. Students with a strong background in creative writing who desire to continue on that path are encouraged to apply. Learn more on the program website.

Career And Outcomes

Career Opportunities

Most students pursuing a master’s degree in English have plans to go on to doctoral programs and academia. They may also teach at two-year colleges, or end up in various professions across the career spectrum as a result of the broad education received in the master’s degree program. Students pursuing the technical writing specialization are typically already employed as working professionals in the field of technical communication.

Admission Requirements

Students from various majors are welcome to apply; however, it is preferred that students have experience in English courses related to their specialization.

Application Requirements:

  • Fill out the online application
  • Pay the application fee (Utah Residents may request to have the application fee waived by contacting Carol Hatch).
  • Standardized tests are NOT required for this application
  • Provide a copy of your transcript
  • Provide three letters of recommendation
  • Submit a portfolio of writing materials that includes both a statement of purpose and a writing sample. Details about supplemental materials can be found on the department’s website.

International students have additional admissions requirements.

Financial Aid

Students can apply to become graduate instructors. To be considered for an instructorship, they must indicate their desire and background in their statement of purpose. Graduate instructors typically teach first-year composition. Students who are graduate instructors might also receive tuition waivers, as well as subsidized health insurance, in addition to compensation.
