The Environmental Geoscience major at Utah State University gives you the science, tools, and experiences to make a difference in building a sustainable world.

The Environmental Geoscience major is an interdisciplinary program dedicated to understanding Earth’s natural systems and applying geological knowledge to solve critical environmental problems. This degree combines core principles of geology and other sciences to investigate interactions between the solid Earth, atmosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere, and the influence of human activity upon these systems. Students in the Environmental Geoscience major learn to analyze, interpret, and address modern environmental and sustainability challenges through a blend of applied coursework and practical field- and laboratory-based experiences.

What You Will Learn

As a student in the Environmental Geoscience major, you will gain the scientific, analytical, and technical expertise needed to tackle emerging environmental issues, including geological hazard mitigation, sustainable energy transitions, water resource security, remediation/restoration of contaminated land and water, and environmental policy. This degree provides valuable and highly transferable skills needed in a wide range of employment sectors, including environmental consulting, energy and mining, engineering geology, government agencies, and non-profits.
