About This Certificate
This certificate offers students a strong foundation in forensic science and criminal investigation, combining scientific principles with practical investigative skills.
To complete the certificate, students take CJ 1350 – Introduction to Forensic Science as the required course and then select two electives from Courtroom Communication, Criminal Investigations, or Crime Scene Processing, totaling nine credit hours. Although only three courses are required, students are welcome to take additional electives to deepen their expertise and further prepare for careers or advanced study in forensic science, law enforcement, or criminal justice.
What You Will Learn
Students will develop a thorough understanding of criminal investigation procedures, including interrogation techniques, evidence collection and preservation, crime scene processing, and the scientific methods used in laboratory analysis.
They will also build communication and advocacy skills essential for presenting testimony and understanding how legal disputes are resolved both in and out of the courtroom. Through hands-on and theoretical learning, students will gain foundational knowledge in the legal, scientific, and administrative aspects of investigative work, while strengthening practical abilities in evidence handling, report writing, crime scene technician duties, and case preparation for prosecution.
