Marine Biology - UC

S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Agriculture & Natural Resources

About This Certificate

The Marine Biology Certificate provides students with a foundation in the science of the world's oceans and the diverse ecosystems they support.

Through courses in marine biology, oceanography, and marine conservation, students explore the remarkable diversity of marine life, the physical and chemical processes that drive the oceans, and the ecological connections that link marine environments across the globe.

Whether you are majoring in the natural sciences, engineering, business, economics, education, policy, or another field, this certificate is designed for students who want to broaden their education with a foundation in marine science. It complements a wide range of majors by providing an understanding of the world's oceans and the scientific principles that underpin marine systems. Students learn from faculty actively engaged in marine research around the world, bringing current discoveries, real-world examples, and hands-on perspectives into the classroom.

What You Will Learn

Students completing the Marine Biology Certificate will develop a strong understanding of marine organisms, ocean processes, and the ecological principles that shape marine ecosystems.

They will examine how biological, physical, and chemical processes interact in the ocean and explore how marine ecosystems respond to both natural environmental variability and human activities. Students will also gain an understanding of the principles and practices of marine conservation and the scientific knowledge needed to evaluate and address contemporary challenges facing the world's oceans.
