Accommodated Testing

Once your testing accommodations have been approved by an accessibility consultant, submit your course accommodation request(s) for the semester.

Make an Exam Reservation

Where your exam with accommodations is scheduled depends on where the rest of the class is taking their exam.

In-Class Exams

All students taking in-class exams should schedule to take their exam at the same time as the rest of the class. Students taking in-class exams at the Logan Campus should make a reservation to take their exam at the DRC in Logan in order to receiving their accommodations. Students at Statewide Campuses who would like to receive their accommodations during in-class exams should make a reservation at their specific Statewide Testing Center, and contact the Accommodated Testing Coordinator if they have any questions or concerns.

Students making reservations to take in-class exams need to make their reservation at least 3 business days in advance to guarantee that the DRC/Statewide Testing Center will be able to obtain the exam materials and proctor the exam. Please call the DRC Testing or your Statewide Testing Center with any questions.

Testing Center Exams

If your class is assigned to take the exam at the testing center, students with testing accommodations should make a reservation at their respective testing center (or their testing center’s reduced distraction room, if applicable). Accommodations will be provided there in the testing center. Please contact the Accommodated Testing Coordinator with any questions or concerns in regards to receiving accommodations.

Accommodations on Canvas and Proctorio Exams

When quizzes/exams are on Canvas, the time extension accommodation will be applied after students have submitted their course accommodation request(s) for the semester. Before students open the quiz or exam, there will be no visual indicator on Canvas that the time is adjusted. If the student is concerned about the time extension, they can contact the Accommodated Testing Coordinator at 435-797-0743 before starting the exam to verify the extension is applied. After the exam has been started, the accommodated time will be displayed. If the time shown does not correctly represent your accommodated time, immediately contact the testing center proctor or call the DRC at 435-797-2444.

If a class is using Proctorio or the exam doesn't need to be proctored (the exam can be taken from home), the student does not need to make arrangements to take the exam in the DRC or the respective testing center.

Text to Speech Accommodations and Proctorio

For students who are approved for text to speech on exams and want this accommodation on their Canvas exams/quizzes, Natural Reader (a Google Chrome extension) is the recommended platform.

Students who are approved for text to speech for exams and want this accommodation on their Proctorio exams should contact the Accommodated Testing Coordinator to arrange for the accommodation to be set up properly in Proctorio.

Instructions for Using Text to Speech with Proctorio

Use this step-by-step guide on how to use text to speech with Proctorio exams.

Cheating Policy

The Disability Resource Center does not tolerate cheating. If a student is caught cheating in the DRC, the student will be asked to stop the exam and the instructor will be notified of the cheating. The student will not be allowed to resume the exam. Refer to Utah State University's cheating policy for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Why do students need to start in-class exams at the same time as the class does?

Accommodations are provided to students with disabilities to give them equal access to university programs, services and activities. By starting the exam at the same time as the class, the DRC is providing equal access to testing. Students should be on time for their reservation or we may not be able to start the exam. If a student is late, we may need to receive instructor permission to start the exam after the rest of the class has already begun.

What should a student do to use their accommodation for in-class or "pop" style quizzes?

For scheduling in-class quizzes or "pop" quizzes, contact the Accommodated Testing Coordinator at (435) 797-0743 or drctesting@usu.edu and they will coordinate with you and your instructor to ensure you receive your accommodations.

Do students need to coordinate with their instructor in order to take an exam at the DRC?

No. After students schedule their exam with the DRC, the DRC Testing Staff will coordinate as needed with instructors to proctor exams.

How do students receive exam accommodations if attending classes at a Statewide Campus?

Students attending classes at a Statewide Campus should first meet with an accessibility consultant to see if they qualify for exam accommodations. Once approved and students have submitted their course accommodation request(s) for the semester, students will take in-class and testing center exams at their respective testing centers. Approved accommodations will be provided there.  Individual questions about testing accommodations should be referred to the Accommodated Testing Coordinator.

How do students receive exam accommodations for Finals Week?

If the student has a final(s) that will be administered in the classroom, the student can take the exam(s) in the DRC. Because of the high number of exams* that we proctor during Finals Week, students should schedule finals with us as early as possible. Please note, if the student fails to schedule finals at least three business days in advance, we may be unable to proctor the exam(s) in our office and the student will need to take the exam with the class.

*Due to the minimal testing space in our office and high demand during finals week, the student may have finals proctored in a different room. The student will be directed where to go and have accommodations provided. Even though the student may be testing in a different room, DRC staff will be present to proctor the exams.

What happens upon completion of an exam at the DRC?

Once the student has completed an exam at the DRC, the proctoring staff will collect all exam materials and return them to the instructor for grading as soon as possible. The student does not need to take any action to get the exam to the instructor.
