Frequently Asked Questions on ETE Professional Development Pathway
The Center for Empowering Teaching Excellence (ETE) created the ETE Professional Development Pathway to align with Utah State University's mission of "fostering the principle that academics comes first" and to the Center's mission to "elevate and promote our culture of teaching excellence." The program is designed to encourage continual professional development in teaching and learning for our USU educators. Participants in the ETE Professional Development Pathway program earn digital badges, or microcredentials, designed in a three-tiered framework based on the documentation of teaching improvement activities and can earn four culminating certificates. These certificates can be used as evidence of one's teaching improvement and dedication to student success. This voluntary program is designed for instructors at all levels (i.e. tenure-track, non-lecturers, clinical faculty, professional practice faculty, adjunct instructors, and graduate instructors). This page outlines frequently asked questions about the ETE Professional Development Pathway program and how to get started.
Aside from fostering a culture of teaching excellence, earning badges shows adequate progress toward your professional development. Documenting your teaching improvement and gaining recognition for the progress you've made can be added to your CV or promotion portfolio.

The best way to choose your pathways is by talking with an ETE staff member during a “Plan your Teaching Excellence Pathway” meeting. This meeting is the first step toward getting started, and it earns you your first badge!
You will document and show all evidence of your engagement, implementation, and contributions through the Empower Teaching Canvas Course. Once you have submitted all the required materials, and have met the criteria outlined for that badge, ETE will review your submission. You then either be awarded the badge or contacted for further material.
Currently available certificates include:
- Explore College Teaching Certificate (designed for graduate students): 5 engage
- Teaching for Student Success Certificate (supplemental certificate for new USU faculty): 3 engage, 2 implement
- Teaching Scholar Certificate: 6 engage, 3 implement, and 1 contribute
- Master Scholar Certificate (completion of Teaching Scholar Certificate is a prerequisite for this certificate): 4 engage, 3 implement, and 3 contribute
Certificates also vary in the time they take to earn. Depending on an instructor's role statement and the time they can spend working on certification greatly impacts the time they take to complete. While badges are awarded at any time during the year, certificates are only awarded at the ETE Conference in August and all badges must be submitted by August 1st to be considered for that year's certificates.
