Landscape Operations and Maintenance

Star and stripes mowed into Old Main

LOAM provides an aesthetically pleasing, efficiently maintainable, diverse landscape to attract the best students, faculty, and staff to USU.

During winter months, LOAM provides snow removal for the main sidewalks on central campus, and sidewalks and roads at Innovation Campus. They assist the Equipment Operators in the winter months with snow removal as needed.

FAQs on Water Conservation in Campus Facilities

USU Facilities continually strives to meet the needs of the campus community and to use resources responsibly. People on campus may have questions about USU’s watering practices and how we respond to drought conditions. Here are answers to our frequently asked questions, and you can review our Resiliency and Drought Plan

How does USU prioritize watering during a drought?

USU follows a Landscape Resiliency and Drought Plan that prioritizes protecting State Champion Trees, mature trees, athletic fields, the Quad, and other heavily used campus areas. As drought conditions worsen, lower-priority turf areas may be allowed to become dormant to conserve water.

Where does USU get water for campus landscapes?

USU owns shares in the Cache Highline Water Association and uses canal water to irrigate campus landscapes. The canal water is not culinary water, and the university cannot pull its full amount at one time. That is why you will see us watering throughout the day.

How does USU respond during drought conditions?

USU uses a smart irrigation system that automatically adjusts watering schedules based on weather conditions and plant needs. USU adjusts irrigation practices based on drought severity and any state or local water restrictions. Conservation measures may include reducing watering, raising mowing heights, applying soil treatments to improve water retention, and allowing some turf areas to go dormant.

Why is the grass on the Quad greener than other areas?

USU takes particular care of turf to ensure it stays healthy and can withstand low water years. This year, it was also treated with a wetting agent that aids in retaining moisture. USU also prioritizes the Quad for water use because it is used so heavily compared to other areas of campus.

How does USU promote water conservation in new projects?

USU incorporates water-efficient landscaping, drought-tolerant plants, and efficient irrigation systems into new construction and renovation projects whenever practical.

Is USU required to reduce outdoor water use?

Yes. Utah law requires state agencies, including universities, to reduce outdoor water use. USU continues to implement conservation measures and improve irrigation efficiency to meet these requirements.

Where can I learn more?

The complete USU Landscape Resiliency and Drought Plan is available on the University's website. Additional information about water-efficient landscaping can be found through the USU Center for Water-Efficient Landscaping.

Where can I report malfunctioning equipment?

If you notice the sprinkler system malfunctioning, contact Facilities Customer Service at 435-797-1947 or facilitiescustserv@usu.edu.
