Core Competency & Behavioral Question Library

Core competencies are the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that influence how employees perform their work, interact with others, and contribute to organizational success. Evaluating competencies helps identify candidates who are likely to succeed in the role and align with organizational values.

Review the job description and determine which competencies are most important for success in the position. Based on the complexity, scope, and level of the role, select 3–6 competencies to build your review, interview, and evaluation process around.

This library provides competency definitions, key behaviors to look for, and sample interview questions to support consistent and objective candidate evaluations. When assessing competencies, focus on specific examples from a candidate's experience and evaluate the actions they took, the decisions they made, and the results they achieved.
