Utah has a wealth of renewable and non-renewable energy assets. This map shows power production facilities illustrated by colored points corresponding to facility type. Additionally, active mines are illustrated over fuel deposits. The Office of Energy Development maintains a list of all power production facilities, and the Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining tracks mining activities. You can view a legend for this map by clicking the “i” in the top left corner.

Total vs. Per Capita Energy Consumption

Utah Geological Survey. (n.d.). Utah Energy and Mineral Statistics, Table 1.1. [Dataset]. Utah Department of Natural Resources. https://geology.utah.gov/energy-minerals/info/energy-mineral-statistics/#toggle-id-1

This chart displays the amount of energy consumed per capita in Utah and the total amount of energy consumed in Utah between the years 1960-2022. This data was retrieved from the Utah Geological Survey’s repository of Utah Energy & Mineral Statistics, which sourced data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the U.S. Census Bureau. Energy consumption per capita is measured in million Btu and total energy consumption is measured in trillion Btu. The chart can be filtered by year using the slider in the top right corner.

Energy Consumption by Source

Utah Geological Survey. (n.d.). Utah Energy and Mineral Statistics, Table 1.7. [Dataset]. Utah Department of Natural Resources. https://geology.utah.gov/energy-minerals/info/energy-mineral-statistics/#toggle-id-1

This chart and table display the amount of energy, in trillion Btu, that has been consumed in Utah from 1960-2024. The chart uses different color fills to differentiate the source of the energy, and the table breaks the sources down by row. In both the chart and the table, you can filter by year using the slider and by source using the check boxes, both located along the right side of the graphics. The data was sourced through the Utah Geological Survey’s repository of Utah Energy & Mineral Statistics, which sourced data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Annual Electricity Generation by County

GridInfo. (2025, September). Electricity Generation Aggregated by State. [Dataset]. GridInfo.com. https://www.gridinfo.com/states

GridInfo. (2025). Summary of Electricity Activity in Utah. [Dataset]. GridInfo.com. https://www.gridinfo.com/utah

“Annual generation” refers to the total production capacity of a power facility over the course of one year, including the amount of power required for transmission and to operate the facility reported in megawatt hours (MWh). Here, power generation facilities and their annual generation is organized by county. The adjacent chart breaks down the total counties generation by primary fuel source. Chart and table are filterable by county.

Coal Production

Utah Geological Survey. (2025, February 27). Coal Production in Utah by Coal Mine, 2002-2024 [Data set]. Utah Department of Natural Resources. https://geology.utah.gov/docs/statistics/coal2.0/pdf/T2.8.pdf

Utah collects annual mining data using UGS coal company questionnaires and through the Mine Safety and Health Administration. This dataset contains a record of coal production over time, including mine, coalfield, company, and county. The dataset is continuously updated as new data becomes available, often with preliminary values for the most recent year. The table contains the amount of coal produced, measured in thousand short tons, for a given year and mine. You can use the slider to adjust the date ranges displayed, and filter by county, coalfield, and mine using the checklists to the right.

Oil and Natural Gas Production

Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining. (n.d.) Statistics: Oil Production. [Dataset]. Utah Department of Natural Resources. https://ogm.utah.gov/statistics-oil-production/

Utah Geological Survey. (2025, May 9). Natural Gas Gross Production in Utah by County, 1993-2023 [Data set]. Utah Department of Natural Resources. https://geology.utah.gov/docs/statistics/naturalgas4.0/pdf/T4.5.pdf

Oil and natural gas production data is provided by the Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining. The dataset includes detailed information on oil and natural gas production by county, field, and operator. Shown here is historic oil and natural gas production summed by county. You can use the slider to adjust the date ranges displayed, and filter by county using the checklists to the right. Oil production is measured in barrels (BBL). Natural gas production is measured in thousand cubic ft.
