The Judi Houston Rangesan and Rangesan Narayanan Undergraduate Research Grant facilitated by the JQL Institute for Land, Water, and Air is a $1500 grant awarded to undergraduate students for projects related to the economics and policies related to public and/or private lands, water resources, the associated environment, and outdoor recreation.

The fall application for this grant will be open from October 15 – November 15 of each year.

The spring application for this grant will be open from February 15 - March 15 of each year. 

Instructions

Applications should be completed using the form in Qualtrics and must include the following items in either Word or pdf format. Please ensure any uploaded files include your name as part of the file name.

  • A one-paragraph summary stating the main idea/hypothesis for your research.
  • A project summary of one to two pages in length that includes the following sections:
    • The background and purpose of your research.
    • A statement of what you hope to accomplish or discover.
    • Who will be involved in your project, including your faculty mentor or faculty advisor.
    • Your methods for research.
    • How you will manage your data or your data integrity plan.
    • Timeline for project completion. All research projects should be completed within one year after the grant is awarded. If more time is needed, extensions may be requested as part of the grant proposal, but an explanation for why an extension is necessary and a plan for final completion should be part of the proposal.
  • A budget using the template created for this grant. The budget should be completed using the template created for this grant in Excel, saved as a Word or pdf file, and uploaded to the application form.
    • Funding may not be used for tuition or class fees.
    • It may be used for project materials, travel costs, or equipment.
  • A support letter from a faculty mentor or advisor that includes a statement they agree to serve in this role, will oversee the research project, and will advise grantees on how to communicate research outcomes in a report or journal paper and poster presentation.

Applicants will also have the option to include other documentation for the project such as additional support letters, reports on previous projects or research completed by the applicant that relates to this proposal, IRB approval if already obtained, etc. If the project involves animals or human subjects, be sure to follow all policies and receive approval from the Office of Research. Additionally, applicants must agree to follow all safety procedures outlined on the Office of Research website.

At the end of the project, grantees agree to submit a report or journal paper summarizing research and outcomes to the JQL Institute for Land, Water, and Air.

Grantees are also highly encouraged to participate in presentations about their research such as poster sessions or research conferences.

Applicants agree that, if awarded the grant, they will write a thank you letter to the donor Rangesan Narayanan. Information on writing the thank you letter will be provided with the grant award notification.
