Andreas Malmendier
College of Arts & Sciences | Department of Mathematics & Statistics
The Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year award is given each year to recognize and promote excellence in teaching. Other scholarly activity such as research and publication records may be considered in the selection process, but the main emphasis is on teaching excellence.
Each dean will appoint a committee comprised of students, faculty, and administrative representation to select an outstanding teacher from the college. From the college nominees, the Faculty Evaluation Committee will select the Eldon J. Gardner Teacher of the Year. The award recipient will be announced at the annual University Faculty Awards Event held in April and the Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony. The award recipient receives a $3,000 award, and the college nominees receive a $1,500 award.

Andreas Malmendier is an Associate Professor of Mathematics. His research lies at the intersection of algebraic geometry and mathematical physics. He is a dedicated and award-winning teacher whose instructional and mentoring contributions span the full undergraduate and graduate curriculum. He makes advanced mathematics accessible through real-world context and leads major course redesigns that strengthen foundational instruction. Equally important, Malmendier's mentoring of PhD and MS students, guiding multiple Honors and URCO projects, and undergraduates who have earned Goldwater Scholarships, an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and competitive NSA internships, shows a profound and ongoing impact on student success.
