Cross- and Dual-listing
This training contains instructions on:
- Cross- or dual-listing two new courses
- Cross- or dual-listing an existing course with a new course
- Cross- or dual-listing two existing courses
- Both cross- and dual-listing a set of courses
Reminder: Cross-listed courses have the same number, but different prefixes and are housed in different departments (i.e. JCOM 4090 and ASTE 4090). Dual-listed courses have the same prefix, but different course levels (i.e. ACCT 5540 and ACCT 6540)
R470: 5.5.2.3 For purposes of efficiency, an institution may offer a 5000-level course concurrently with a 6000-level graduate course, with the two sections meeting together under the same instructor. In such cases, students enrolled in the 6000- level course shall be required to complete additional and substantive learning objectives and assignments approved for graduate-level work beyond those required of students enrolled at the 5000 level.
1. If you are cross- or dual-listing two new courses
- Two course proposals are required— one for each course. This example features ACCT 1234 and MGT 1234 to be cross-listed.
- One proposal must be submitted first. When you reach the cross/dual-list fields, you will not be able to add the corresponding course into the drop-down fields. The menu will only populate courses that are approved or have started the approval process.
- There is a third field below the cross/dual-listed dropdown fields labeled ‘Requested Cross-Listed or Dual-Listed Course is a NEW course’. Add the prefix and code for the corresponding cross/dual-listed course that has not been submitted yet. (Please also include the responsible department on this line if the course is a cross-list)
- Fill in the rest of the course information as normal.
- Submit the proposal.
- You will now be able to create the proposal for the second course.
- When you reach the cross/dual-list fields, ensure that the Effective Start Term (the field below the Cross/Dual-listed fields) is the same as the course you just submitted
- Once the effective term has been chosen, you will be able to add the newly pending course to this proposal. It will say “(pending in the workflow)” beside the course in the drop-down. This will not work if the Effective Start Term has not been selected in the fields below the Cross/Dual list fields.
- Complete and submit this proposal. (Remember that all course information between dual-listed courses must be identical between the courses, and that all information between cross-listed courses must be identical, excepting restrictions and prerequisites. The Catalog Editors will reject the proposals back to you for adjustments if they do not match appropriately).
- You can now edit the first proposal to include this new course. Click the ‘edit proposal’ button in the top right-hand corner of the proposal to make your edits. ‘Save changes’ when your edit is done.
BOTH PROPOSALS WILL NEED TO BE SUBMITTED BEFORE THEY WILL BE APPROVED TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE APPROVAL WORKFLOW.
2. If you are cross- or dual-listing an existing course with a new course
- Two proposals are required— one for each course. Submit the new course request first. You will be able to add the existing course as a cross- or dual-list requirement.
- Fill in the new course information as normal, then submit. If the proposal is not submitted, you will not be able to add the new course to the corresponding existing course as a DL/CL option.
- Submit the modification form next. When you reach the cross/dual-list fields, ensure that the Effective Start Term below them is the same as the course you just submitted
- Once the effective term has been chosen, you will be able to add the newly pending course to this proposal. It will say (pending in the workflow) beside the course in the drop-down.
- Ensure that any dependencies for the modified course is addressed.
BOTH PROPOSALS WILL NEED TO BE SUBMITTED BEFORE THEY WILL BE APPROVED TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE APPROVAL WORKFLOW.
3. If you are cross- or dual-listing two existing courses
- Two proposals are required— one for each course. Either can be submitted first. Add the corresponding course in the appropriate fields; the menu will only populate courses that are approved or have started the approval process.
- Submit this proposal after filling out the rest of the proposal as needed.
- Complete and submit the second proposal, adding the corresponding course in the appropriate DL/CL field. (Remember that all course information between dual-listed courses must be identical between the courses, and that all information between cross-listed courses must be identical, excepting restrictions and prerequisites. The Catalog Editors will reject the proposals back to you for adjustments if they do not match appropriately).
- Ensure that any dependencies for the modified courses are addressed.
- Submit the modification form next. When you reach the cross/dual-list fields, ensure that the Effective Start Term below them is the same as the course you just submitted.
BOTH PROPOSALS WILL NEED TO BE SUBMITTED BEFORE THEY WILL BE APPROVED TO MOVE FORWARD IN THE APPROVAL WORKFLOW.
4. If you are wanting to both cross- and dual-listing a set of courses
- Follow the instructions outlined above for your particular scenario. New Cross- and dual-listings can be requested on the same proposal. Please ensure that a corresponding proposal is submitted for each course in the listing.
- Remember that all course information between dual-listed courses must be identical between the courses, and that all information between cross-listed courses must be identical, excepting restrictions and prerequisites. The Catalog Editors will reject the proposals back to you for adjustments if they do not match appropriately.
- Address the dependencies for any modified courses in the set.
