Communitas Lecture: David Benjamin Sherry to Celebrate Beauty of the American Landscape

By Brooklyn Williams |

LOGAN, Utah — The Communitas Lecture Series welcomes renowned artist David Benjamin Sherry, known for reinvigorating the American Western landscape tradition by exploring the intricate connections between humanity and nature.

The lecture will take place at 5 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Russell/Wanlass Performance Hall.

As part of the yearlong Communitas Lecture Series, which celebrates artists, designers and scholars committed to community, Sherry brings a unique perspective that challenges conventional depictions of the American landscape.

Working primarily in analog film photography and painting, Sherry’s large-scale, monochromatic work offers fresh perspectives on Western landscapes. His art emphasizes queer identity, bold color and an element of mysticism.

“Color is a conduit for me to convey an emotional resonance for the landscape, while weaving in my sense of otherness as a queer person,” Sherry said. “Through my work, I aim to symbolically represent those who have been historically omitted from the American West’s mythical narrative of rugged (straight, white, male) individualism.”

Originally from Stony Brook, New York, Sherry now lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He holds a BFA and an MFA in photography, with distinctions including the Richard Dixon Welling Prize, along with numerous other awards and grants for his contributions to art and photography.

This event offers a unique opportunity for attendees to engage directly with Sherry’s thought-provoking perspectives on art, identity and the environment. The evening will celebrate the beauty of the American landscape and the diverse voices shaping its story.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information on the Communitas Lecture Series, visit the website. To view Sherry’s work and achievements, visit his website.
