Distinguished HASS Alum Glade A. Myler to Speak at USU
The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences continues its Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series with an appearance by attorney Glade A. Myler, Friday, Feb. 26.
Myler will discuss his career as an attorney while recounting his experiences and the importance of a liberal arts education during his presentation, “Mama, Don’t Let Your Sons Grow Up to be Lawyers (or Why do I need English and Math?),” at USU’s Haight Alumni Center from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The lecture is free and all are invited.
The HASS Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series is provided by USU’s college of HASS and is hosted by Dean Yolanda Flores Niemann. She especially encourages students who study in the college’s various disciplines to attend.
In summarizing his message, especially to current students, Myler said that all learning experiences are valuable, not only for future employment but for life in general.
“Being well rounded does not mean in the mid-section,” he said. “For most professions, and particularly for attorneys, the more knowledge one has accumulated, the better one can be in that profession. I often have trials that require some knowledge of a subject that I had many years ago either in high school or college.”
The guest speaker graduated from USU in 1972, earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with minors in English, German and music. He went on to earn his juris doctor from Brigham Young University in 1981. He became a member of the Utah Bar in 1981 and the Nevada Bar in 1982. His legal experience includes one year with the Clark County (Las Vegas) Public Defender’s Office, four years as the assistant district attorney of Pershing County in Nevada and the city attorney for Lovelock, Nev. Myler’s private, general practice experience includes work in domestic law, contracts, criminal defense, wills and estates and real estate.
“For approximately 16 years, I worked in workers compensation insurance defense with Nevada’s workers compensation arm, the State Industrial Insurance System,” Myler said. “During that time I had numerous administrative law trials.”
Since 2001, Myler has been with the Office of the Attorney General in Nevada as the senior deputy attorney general. There, he mainly practices administrative law, representing all aspects of emergency management and homeland security.
Myler has lectured extensively and also taught Spanish at Western Nevada College and Truckee Meadows Community College, as well as Spanish and paralegal classes for the Nevada Department of Corrections at the Nevada State Prison.
Myler and his wife, Carolyn Morgan — also a USU alum — have five children and nine grandchildren. Foreign languages remain an interest and hobby, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, French and Italian — in order of proficiency, he said. He also sings with the Carson Chamber Singers, enjoys gardening and keeping fit. He is a published poet.
The HASS Distinguished Alumni Speaker Series continues in March with Amanda Butterfield (’01) who is currently broadcasting from the 2010 Olympics for KSL-television. For information on the series, contact Natalie Archibald Smoot, 435-797-1195.
