Former Dean and Long-Time Faculty Member Dies

Gary Kiger, former dean of Utah State University’s College of Humanities Arts and Social Sciences, died Monday, Aug. 11, in Salt Lake City at University Hospital after being transferred from Logan Regional Hospital. His family, including his wife, daughter and sister-in-law were with him at the time of death.

“Utah State University is greatly saddened by this news,” USU President Stan Albrecht said. “The Utah State University family has lost a valued and much-loved member. Gary’s accomplishments were many, and he will be missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.”

 

Kiger was named dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences in 2003 and guided the college for five years. During his administration the college experienced a number of notable achievements, including the construction of a world-class performance hall and the creation of the Caine School of the Arts.

 

A memorial service is planned Friday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. at the Logan Golf and Country Club (710 North 1500 East). A reception immediately follows at the Country Club. 

 

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Gary Kiger Scholarship Fund in the Department of Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology. Contributions can be completed online.
