Holiday Campus Closing and Energy Conservation

Utah State University is essentially closing down over the period between Christmas Eve and New Years. The university will be saving energy during this period and has the opportunity to save even more if individuals will follow a few simple suggestions.

Please be sure your office and area lights are out when you leave. We have installed sensors in most of the larger areas but it would help if everyone checked.

Please be sure your windows are closed. This may sound very basic
but several years ago someone left for two weeks during this period
with their office window wide open. Needless to say, when they
returned they found the ceiling in the floor as a result of frozen water
pipes that had thawed causing major damage to the building and to
their personal effects.
  • Please turn off computer monitors, printers, and copiers.
  • Please close or draw the window blinds.
  • We have encouraged people to not use portable space heaters as they are huge energy users and somewhat dangerous. If you do have one, please ensure that it is off before leaving.
  • Keeping the building foyer doors closed at all times will really help. The only reason to have foyer doors is to conserve energy and the practice of blocking them open for convenience is counter productive to our conservation efforts.
  • Please check the thermostats in your area. They should be in the range of 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit during this period. We do have some ability to control or set back overall building temperatures by adjusting fans and other controls during weekends and nights. We do not set back temperatures if the weather is extremely cold because there is a higher risk of freezing with some of our older buildings.
Utah State Facilities really appreciates your cooperation during this holiday period and suggests that following these practices would also help year around energy conservation. Have a great Holiday season.
