Retired Professor Exhibiting Work at USU

Utah State University professor emeritus Adrian Van Suchtelen exhibits a lifetime’s worth of work in “Life Drawings and Prints” Sept. 3-28 in the Tippetts Exhibit Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center on USU’s Logan campus.

“I like the idea of putting up my life’s work of drawings and prints,” said Van Suchtelen, retired professor in the Department of Art and Design. “These pieces remind me of when Harrison Groutage brought me to Cache Valley in 1967. I want to dedicate this show to his memory.”

Van Suchtelen was hired by Groutage, a former department head, and taught at USU for 37 years in drawing, printmaking, sculpture and painting, filling in when professors went on sabbatical.

This exhibit features works of art created throughout Van Suchtelen’s life, including pieces he has reworked. Accentuating the vanitas and four seasons’ themes, the art reminds us of the transience of life and that we need to enjoy things while we are here, said Van Suchtelen.

In art, vanitas is a genre of still-life painting that flourished in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. Vanitas paintings contain collections of objects.

“These two themes have been my focus for many years and I am looking forward to exhibiting my work,” said Van Suchtelen.

“Adrian Van Suchtelen: Life Drawings and Prints” can be seen at the Tippetts Exhibit Hall, located in the Chase Fine Arts Center, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
