USU College of Science Recognizes Top Scholars of 2020

Jared Bryan, who was named the university's 2020 Scholar of the Year at the Robins Awards and is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, is among scholars honored by USU’s College of Science. Nichole Bresee.

Utah State University’s College of Science honors 2020 graduates with a video message and recognizes students, faculty and staff for outstanding achievements.

“At this unprecedented time in this unprecedented situation, we honor our students for their hard work and for their service,” said College of Science Dean Maura Hagan. “We also honor our faculty and staff for their mentorship of students, excellence in research and their efforts in providing meaningful learning opportunities.”

Valedictorian for the college is Jesse Wheeler and the college’s Scholar of the Year is Jared Bryan. Bryan was also named the university’s 2020 Scholar of the Year at the Robins Awards on April 11.

Kelvyn Bladen, Brandon Calley, Ryden Crowther, Greg Hoffmann, Bo Johnson and Whitney Skabelund Conger are the college’s Dean’s Scholars.

Alexandra Lish is the college’s Peak Prize Undergraduate Researcher of the Year, Randi Rasmussen is the college’s Undergraduate Teaching Fellow of the Year and Thalia Alfaro is the college’s 2019-2020 Legacy of Utah State nominee.

College of Science student senator Alex Lyons is recognized for his service during the 2019-20 academic year.  

Graduate Student (PhD) Researcher of the Year is Tatiana Soboleva and Graduate Student (MS) Researcher of the Year is Heather Upin. Tyler Bowles is Graduate Student Teacher of the Year.

Samuel Rivera received the 2020 USU Presidential Community-Engaged Alumnus Award.

Mary-Ann Muffoletto received the college’s 2020 Staff Excellence Award.

Zhi-Qiang Wang is the college’s Faculty Researcher of the Year and was also named the university’s 2020 Faculty Researcher of the Year at the Robins Awards on April 11.

Faculty Teacher of the Year is KimberLeigh Hadfield and Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year is Andreas Malmendier. Faculty Graduate Mentor of the Year is Brynja Kohler.

Susannah French and Tammy Rittenour were promoted to full professor. Awarded the title of associate professor with tenure are Alexis Ault, Karen Kapheim and Andreas Malmendier. Lori Spears is promoted to the title of professional practice associate professor. Jessica Habashi and Thayne Sweeten are promoted to principal lecturer and KimberLeigh Hadfield is promoted to senior lecturer.

Ian Anderson is honored for 40 years of service. Keith Mott and Dennis Welker are recognized for 35 years of service.

Honored for 30 years of service is Jim Wheeler. David Kardelis and David Peak are honored for 25 years of service, and Michelle Baker, Alexander Boldyrev, Joel Pederson and Juergen Symanzik are honored for 20 years of service.

David Brown, Carol Dehler and Brynja Kohler are honored for 15 years of service. Honored for 10 years of service are Robert Davies, Susannah French, Nathan Geer, Blair Larsen and John Weber.
