USU Graduate Joins Elite National Teaching Program

Utah State University graduate Sheldon Browning has been accepted by Teach for America, the national corps of outstanding recent college graduates of all academic majors who commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools.

Browning was selected from among 6,500 applicants from across the country. Teach For America is highly selective, with more than 90 percent of those accepted having held leadership positions on their campuses or in their communities.

“We are looking for accomplished individuals possess the qualities necessary to not only have an impact on students during their two-year commitment, but to effect long-term educational and social reform in careers across all sectors,” said Elisa Clapp, Teach For America’s vice president of recruitment and selection.

Browning graduated with a degree in international studies in 2005. During his tenure at Utah State, he was elected as the 2004-2005 ASUSU Service Vice President and oversaw many campus-wide service events. He also combined his major and his interests as a volunteer with the “Spanish Ambassador” program, which provides needed translations for Hispanic families in Cache Valley.
