USU's Percussion Ensembles in Spring Concert

Utah State University’s Percussion Ensemble and the Caine Percussion Ensemble, both under the direction of Dennis Griffin, are featured in concert Monday, April 2, in the Kent Concert Hall of the Chase Fine Arts Center at USU. Concert time is 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are available at the door and admission is $5 for the public. USU students are admitted free with an activity card.

The spring concert features several student soloists accompanied by the ensemble.

Tristan Wardle will play the Suite for Solo Drumset and Percussion Ensemble by David Mancini. Alissa Kirk, Robyn Peterson, Mike Hylton and Sam Bryson each perform a solo movement in Rosauro’s Concerto for Marimba and Percussion Ensemble.

Other selections on the program include Natural Forces by Andrew Stout, an exciting work that includes all 14 of the ensemble performers playing numerous instruments that range from temple bell to tonal bass drums, Griffin said.

Dragoon by Lynn Glassock represents the most challenging work of the evening.

“The piece re-creates, to begin with, the military presence associated with ‘dragoons’ by the very strong rhythmic energy of the drums,” Griffin said. “It evolves into an almost hypnotically repetitive section that includes the melodic instruments.”

Sousa’s Stars and Stripes, played by the full ensemble, brings the concert to a rousing and familiar conclusion.

Griffin said families are invited to the concert.

“The concert represents a wonderful way to acquaint the listener with the exciting world of percussion instruments,” he said.
