USU School of Veterinary Medicine's Reindeer Express Canceled This Year

By Riata Cummings |

In years past, The Reindeer Express has welcomed hundreds of guests to USU's Animal Science Farm.

The Utah State University School of Veterinary Medicine planned to welcome the Christmas season with this year’s edition of The Reindeer Express. However, for the health and safety of community members, faculty, staff and students, Reindeer Express had to be canceled.

Although the special event cannot happen this year, the staff, students and faculty of the School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to creating opportunities for people to meet and learn about animals and look forward to future events. Reindeer Express allowed students and faculty to share their knowledge about animal care and the importance of protecting animals and their habitat.

Even during a pandemic, animals need care, and Reindeer Express organizers are certain that Santa’s reindeer are receiving excellent care. Veterinarian Isaac Bott, a USU alumnus, practices at Mountain West Animal Hospital in Springville, UT, and is considered an authority on reindeer reproduction. He has an artificial insemination program that helps diversify and improve the species’ genetics. Bott transports reindeer to Cache Valley for Reindeer Express each year, viewing it as an opportunity to support future veterinarians and teach people about the animals in his care and their importance as a species.

Learn more about Bott’s reindeer and The Reindeer Express with video from last year’s event on the School of Veterinary Medicine's website.

An essential part of The Reindeer Express is fundraising to supports scholarships that are important to vet students who invest substantial time and money in a demanding degree program. Donations of any amount build the school’s scholarship endowment and will help prepare outstanding future veterinarians. Online giving is available on a secure website or by contacting Michelle Merrill, director of development, michelle.merrill@usu.edu, 435-797-8556.
