USU Tooele Campus Breaks Ground for a New Building

Utah State University President Stan Albrecht accepted a generous donation of land from Tooele City and a $1.2 million donation from Tooele County for a new building at the Tooele Regional Campus groundbreaking ceremony Monday, April 14.

“When the current building was dedicated in 1996, many of us probably thought the 18,000-square-foot building was more than we would ever need,” said Steve Christensen, president and CEO of the Tooele Federal Credit Union. “But the famous quote from ‘Field of Dreams’ — ‘if you build it, they will come’ — applies to this campus.”

Tooele has experienced a consistent 20 percent growth rate for the past several semesters, and now 700 students attend the campus, said Ronda Menlove, vice provost of Regional Campuses and Distance Education. This building will add seven new classrooms, eight new faculty offices, a childcare center and a lecture hall and will more than double the size of the campus.

In alignment with Tooele Regional Campus Executive Director Kathleen Robinson’s, theme and initiative, “students first,” this expansion is primarily for the students.

“It’s great to see the community aligning with the director to put students first,” said Ben Clifford, a recent business graduate at the Tooele Regional Campus and Tooele native. “I think students will recognize the attention the campus is getting and this change will draw more students to the USU Tooele campus. This expansion is something we really need, and it will be nice not to have so many classes held in the local high school buildings.”

There is nothing more important than education, said Albrecht. This project will continue the dream of making education accessible to everyone. The generous donations from Tooele City and Tooele County show that the commitment to education in Tooele is strong and my gratitude to them is great.

“This is not finishing something, this is just getting started,” he said.
