Utah Conservation Corps Host Service Events to Celebrate 25 Years of Service

LOGAN, Utah — The Utah Conservation Corps is hosting service events In Logan, Moab, and Salt Lake City in celebration of its 25-year anniversary. Members of the public are invited to serve alongside current Utah Conservation Corps AmeriCorps members at these events that highlight current projects with longstanding community partners.

The first event will be from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 24 in Moab and will spotlight Utah Conservation Corps’ role in the ongoing multi-partner Pack Creek restoration project. Utah Conservation Corps AmeriCorps members have been removing invasives like Russian olive in the Pack and Mill Creek riparian corridors in Moab. The cut invasives will be used as firewood, and volunteers are invited to assist loading firewood into a dump trailer for the Warm Elders Program, which serves the Navajo Nation.

An event from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 15 in Salt Lake City will focus on Utah Conservation Corps work with the city’s Department of Public Lands at the Cornell Wetlands along the Jordan River. Volunteers are invited to plant natives in wetland areas where Utah Conservation Corps crews have worked with Salt Lake City to remove invasive species. Finally, an event on Oct. 17 at the Flores Family Community Garden (357 ½ S. 100 West) in Logan will showcase Utah Conservation Corps’ support of local food security efforts. Volunteers will assist in preparing the garden for winter season.

“We’re excited to show off some recent projects our AmeriCorps members have served at in support of our mission to develop the conservation leaders of tomorrow. Project sponsors like those at these three events have been critical giving our AmeriCorps members mentorship, high-impact skills, and experiences completing critical natural resource projects throughout the state,” said Sean Damitz, executive director for the USU Center for Community Engagement and co-founder of the Utah Conservation Corps.
