Utah State Hosts Public Forum on Proposed Second-Tier Tuition Increase
Utah State University President Albrecht opened the March 8 public forum on Utah State’s newly updated proposed second-tier tuition increase by explaining conditions that led to the university’s initial proposal.
The president said the earlier proposal, which called for an 11 percent tuition increase for the 2005-2006 year, reflected reduced funding from the Utah Legislature that resulted in high deficits in the university’s fuel and power and operations budgets. The proposal called for additional increases in subsequent years that translated into a 43 percent cumulative increase within the next three years.
News of increased state funding for these areas during this past month’s Legislative session, however, has prompted the university to reduce the proposed 2005-2006 increase to 6.25 percent.
“You can put that 43 percent figure out of your head,” said President Albrecht.
Albrecht joined with ASUSU President Les Essig to review the proposed use of Tier II tuition funds and to answer questions from students.
