Utah State University Expands Scholarship Options for College-Ready Students

Utah State University has updated its academic scholarship process to both broaden access and better reflect student preparation for higher education. The goal is to ensure scholarships reward the academic effort students invest in high school while reinforcing readiness for the demands of college.

USU’s new model provides two pathways for first-year undergraduate academic scholarships:

• Guaranteed Awards — Based on a combination of GPA and ACT or SAT scores.

• Course Rigor Evaluation — For applicants who apply test-optional, GPA is reviewed alongside the rigor of coursework, including AP, honors, International Baccalaureate (IB), or concurrent/dual enrollment classes.

This approach recognizes not only academic performance but also the challenge and persistence demonstrated through rigorous coursework.

“High school GPA is an important measure, but it does not always capture the full picture of a student’s preparation,” said Craig Whyte, executive director of student financial support. “When we factor in the rigor of courses such as AP, concurrent/dual enrollment, IB or honors, we are acknowledging the commitment it takes to be ready for the demands of college learning. Our scholarship model reflects that readiness.”

The updates align with USU’s commitment to affordability, access and student success.
