'The Physics of Light' Topic for Nov. 22 USU Physics’ Demo Show
How do rainbows form? Why is the sky blue? How do glasses correct your vision?
Inquiring minds of all ages are invited to learn the answer to these questions and more at Utah State University Department of Physics’ sixth annual November Demo Show Friday, Nov. 22.
This year’s theme is “The Physics of Light.” The gathering begins at 7 p.m. in the Emert Auditorium, Room 130, of the Eccles Science Learning Center on campus. Admission is free and open to all ages.
“It’s time again to kick off Thanksgiving week with our popular annual tradition,” says James Coburn, teaching laboratory supervisor and demonstration specialist in USU’s Department of Physics. “This year, our featured topic is all about light.”
“We’ll talk about how optical illusions trick our minds,” he says. “We’ll see if a laser can pop a balloon. We’ll explore different ways to produce color and determine why our Cache Valley sunsets are so brilliant. It will be an evening of ‘illuminating’ fun.”
Physics? Fun?
“Absolutely,” Coburn says. “Unfortunately, many are intimidated by physics study. But it shouldn’t be that way — learning about science is something everyone can enjoy.”
Coburn says he was inspired to create the November Demo Show, now a Cache Valley favorite, by England’s Royal Institution Christmas Lectures, which have been a popular British tradition since 1825.
