Huntsman School of Business Honors USU Head Football Coach Matt Wells

Utah State University head football coach Matt Wells has been recognized many times for the success his team has had on the field. USU’s Jon M. Huntsman School of Business recently honored him, however, for the way he coached his teams to victory.

The Huntsman School of Business honored Wells with a Professional Achievement Award. Dean Douglas D. Anderson said the Huntsman School was proud of Wells for his team’s victories on the field, the Mountain West championship earned and the bowl game the Aggies won. However, he said, that was not the reason he was being recognized.

“We are proud of the way in which you have done it, and we are proud of the values you represent,” Anderson said.

He explained to Wells that he was being given the award because of the “leadership you are providing and the leadership you are developing with our student athletes, and also the examples that you and the team are setting for this university.”

Wells graduated in 1996 with a bachelor’s in marketing, cum laude, from the Huntsman School of Business, and now serves on its National Advisory Board.

“It’s a huge honor but I’m just the head coach of those guys and that staff, and it’s a team effort,” he said. “I couldn’t do it without them. I couldn’t do it without their attitudes and their efforts.”

He said only 6.5 percent of college athletes go on to the National Football League, so his staff emphasizes the importance of a good education, telling the team that “you’d better take your degree and everything you learned in college and become a better husband, a better dad, a better business leader.”

Wells said he has been applying marketing principles as he leads the team, understanding that it has a brand position important to USU, the football program and its recruiting efforts.

In his first season Wells led Utah State to the inaugural Mountain West Championship and also posted USU’s third-ever bowl game with a 21-14 win against No. 24 Northern Illinois in the 2013 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. Wells was named the 2013 Mountain West Coach of the Year.

Wells talked earlier in the day about overcoming adversity when he spoke at a dean’s convocation that was held as part of the Partners In Business Leadership Conference. Among the obstacles USU had to overcome in 2013 were the season-ending injuries of five athletes from its offensive line.
