Student ensembles from USU's Department of Music present the spring Big Bands event April 9. The evening spotlights selections by Steely Dan.
Utah State University Jazz Big Bands — student ensembles in the Music Department — feature the music of Steely Dan in their spring concert, Wednesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus.
The USU Jazz Orchestra will perform Steely Dan’s FM (No Static at All). This song originally appeared on the soundtrack album from the 1978 movie FM. The group will also perform Gaucho from the 1980 album of the same name.
“The other selections that the jazz orchestra will perform are Jens Jensen’s arrangement of Sofus Forsberg’s No Beat, and Mathias Ruegg’s swinging arrangement of the Duke Ellington classic I’m Just a Lucky So and So, featuring singer Betsy Nelson and trumpeter James Canty,” said Jon Gudmundson, director of jazz studies and associate professor in the Caine College of the Arts at USU. “They will also perform the barn-burning, Maynard Ferguson saxophone section feature Cruisin’ for a Bluesin.”
Greg Wheeler, assistant professor in the department of music, said the USU Jazz Ensembles will play pieces by Les Hooper, Gordon Goodwin and Bill Potts.
“The group will finish its set by performing the rockin’ Bodhisttiva of Steely Dan,” said Wheeler. “The song appeared on their 1973 album Countdown to Ecstasy.”
Tickets for “Big Band” are $10 general admission, $8 seniors and youth, $5 faculty and staff and free for USU students with valid ID.
