USU Photo Gallery

Utah State University's digital asset management system provides the best curated images available to represent the University. This growing gallery is available to students, faculty, staff and media outlets to use for non-commercial use. Below, you'll find more detailed information regarding photo use, our approach to keywording and a tutorial video for photoshelter to help you find the right photos. As a general rule, be cautious using any content without a model release. Especially any content that might feature minors or will be used in any way that could imply something concerning.

Marketing Use

For marketing use within organizations and departments at Utah State University, please use images with the model release keyword. For high profile and more permanent use of images (think Billboard, magazine cover etc), reach out to the University Marketing & Communications, Marketing Team. We make an effort to contact the model in the image and make them aware of the use.

Please be cautious about misrepresenting models in photos. Examples include using a student to highlight mental health issues, having them represent a college or department they aren't enrolled in, or implying they are promoting something they aren't aware of or don't actually support.

Third-Party & Commercial Use

Images on Photoshelter are not for third-party or commercial use without permission from University Marketing & Communications, Trademarks & Licensing.

Editorial use is allowed with attribution. Editorial use refers to the use of images or content in a manner that illustrates or accompanies journalistic content, typically for news, commentary, or educational purposes. This type of use is distinct from commercial use, which is aimed at advertising or promoting products, services, or brands.

Website Use

Whenever possible, prioritize using images that include a model release, especially when a clearly identifiable individual is the main subject. For instance, a wide shot of a large crowd at a game—where no one person is the focus—typically does not require a model release. However, if the image highlights a specific fan, a model release is recommended.

For websites focused on recruitment or other commercial purposes, always use images with a model release.

In cases where images are used for informational or editorial purposes, a model release is preferred but not required. Images used for news coverage do not require a model release.

Keywords

Keywords are an important process that allows you to discover the correct images without knowing where they might be saved. It also let's you find similar images across multiple galleries.

AI has now been added to Photoshelter allowing you to search for things that aren't necessarily tagged. USU specific terminology won't provide good results, but general objects can be valuable such as phone, computer, book, mountain, water etc.

Tips for searching

You can also use a minus sign to eliminate photos with that keyword.
Student Life -Commencement will show all student life photos without including commencement.
