Communitas Lecture Series: Kia Weatherspoon

Kia Weatherspoon is the founder of Determined by Design, the only interior design firm in the U.S. offering Design Equity services. A U.S. Air Force veteran who served in the Middle East following 9/11, she returned to earn two art degrees and establish a career in hospitality, multi-family, and high-end residential design. Driven by a desire for meaningful impact, she launched her firm to bring high-quality design to historically overlooked communities, proving that beauty and being seen are essential rather than extra. Weatherspoon now speaks across the country, empowering leaders and creatives to build with purpose and create equitable spaces without shrinking themselves.

Chamber Music Society of Logan presents Borromeo String Quartet

Each visionary performance of the award-winning Borromeo String Quartet (BSQ) strengthens and deepens its reputation as one of the most important ensembles of our time.
Admired and sought-after for both its fresh interpretations of the classical music canon and its championing of works by twentieth- and twenty-first-century composers, the ensemble has been hailed for its “edge-of-the-seat performances,” by the Boston Globe, which called it “simply the best.”
The BSQ has collaborated with some of this generation’s most important composers, including John Cage, György Ligeti and Leon Kirchner, and has performed on major concert stages across the globe, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and Wigmore Hall.

Wassermann Piano Series presents Youl Sun - Bachauer Gold Medalist

Youl Sun came to international prominence with a remarkable triple victory at the 2024 Gina Bachauer International Artists Piano Competition, earning the Gold Medal, Audience Choice Prize, and Student Jury Prize. Known for his exceptional technique, musicality, and artistic maturity, he continues to build an international career with performances in Europe, Asia, and the United States. His recent accomplishments include First Prize at the 2024 Seoul International Music Competition, Second Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2023 Viseu International Piano Competition in Portugal, and top prizes at the Isang Yun International Music Competition, the Istanbul Orchestra'Sion International Piano Competition, and the Maria Canals International Music Competition. Earlier honors include First Prize and the Polonaise Prize at the Asia-Pacific International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition. A graduate of the Korea National University of Arts, where he was admitted as an artistic prodigy, Youl continued his studies in France at the Schola Cantorum de Paris and is currently enrolled at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, studying with Olivier Gardon. Communitas Lecture Series: Zora Murff and Rana Young
Arts/Entertainment
Zora J Murff is an artist, educator, and Assistant Professor of Art and Black Studies in the School of Art + Design at the University of Oregon. He received his MFA in studio art from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a BS in psychology from Iowa State University. Drawing from his background as a social worker for youth on court probation, Murff’s photography unearths hidden histories and offers visual investigations of Black life, often addressing the violent paradoxes created by imperial paradigms. His bold, straightforward visual language encourages viewers to reflect on the power that visual culture holds over understandings of race, class, and societal hierarchies.
Rana Young is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Art in the School of Art + Design at the University of Oregon. She earned her MFA in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and a BFA in Studio Art from Portland State University. Through her practice, Young employs photography to construct autobiographical narratives set within the Midwest landscape. Her projects utilize staged scenes, archival images, and documentary techniques to confront and articulate the complex dynamics of familial bonds, hereditary trauma, childhood abandonment, and mental illness.
