April-May 2023 Newsletter
Congratulations on a great Spring term! In this newsletter, we share resources for final grades, announce a summer online course development bootcamp, and share additional training and technology tips. Our next newsletter will be the midsummer newsletter, released in July.
Resources for Final Grades
A good final grading practice is to give students time to review their grades in Canvas before you submit them to Banner. Also, make sure every student has a grade for every assignment, and make sure all assignment grades are posted for all students. For more information on preparing and posting grades, see the following tutorials:
- Preparing grades in Canvas and submitting grades from Canvas to Banner
- Submitting grades directly to Banner
Grades submitted to Banner are "rolled to history" at about 5pm each weekday. Afterward, they can be changed only by submitting a change of grade form.
Grades are due 96 hours hours after the final examination (not counting weekends).
Incomplete grades: Students with extenuating circumstances, who have completed most of their coursework, may petition you for extra time to finish the course. If you are willing to grant the student's petition, you must submit an incomplete grade request form on behalf of the student. The registrar's office reviews the form and decides whether to grant the request. You do not submit a grade for the student until they have finished their course work. When they are done, you will submit a change of grade form with the student's official grade.
Last date of attendance for F grades: When a student receives a failing grade, you must enter the student's last date of attendance. For classes with meeting times, this can be the last day the student appeared in class. You can also go to the New Analytics tool in your Canvas course and use the last date of participation shown for the student.

Technology Notes
- CIDI continues to keep tabs on developments in AI. Many tools exist beyond ChatGPT that leverage AI. A curated directory of many existing AI tools can be found at https://allthingsai.com/. An interesting trend in AI development that is likely to be impactful is the development of autonomous agents.
- Speaking of AI, be sure to include a note in your upcoming syllabi about your approach to AI use on your course assignments. CIDI has put together a small number of generic examples you can look to for reference.
- Some recent and upcoming Canvas features include grading-by-question in Canvas New Quizzes, automatically sharing a New Quiz item bank with the current course, and dragging-and-dropping multiple files onto the Canvas Rich Text Editor. See all release notes on the Canvas Release Notes page.
