What Is General Education at USU?
In this Center for Civic Excellence program, you will cultivate habits of mind that will help you thrive after graduation. This is a 27-credit Certificate consisting of 9 classes and is required of all degree seeking students. The program is built to develop the following intellectual and durable skills, which are in high demand:
- Ways of Knowing: To understand human experience and the world in which we live, engage with big questions, great debates, enduring ideas, and foundational knowledge that have shaped contemporary society and American institutions;
- Civil Inquiry & Dialogue: To productively engage in a pluralistic society, participate in rigorous intellectual inquiry and effective communication across ideological, viewpoint, and cultural differences, pursuing understanding while always respecting the dignity of other people even when disagreeing with their views;
- Integrative Practices: To contribute meaningfully to the common good, integrate information and diverse ways of knowing to apply multiple perspectives when approaching complex problems;
- Civic Characteristics: To flourish as a person and grow as a lifelong learner, demonstrate curiosity, intellectual humility, adaptability, and resilience.
