Transfer and Articulation at USU

As the administrative unit overseeing general education at USU, the Civic Center ensures all CIVC prefix courses meet the guidelines and requirements for designations and transfer under USHE Policies R470 and R471.

Transfer and Articulation of CIVC Courses within Utah

All CIVC prefix general education courses taught at USU will transfer automatically and seamlessly to fulfill general education course requirements at every other USHE institution. Furthermore, general education courses taken at other USHE institutions or completed through other means (e.g., AP, ACT, SAT, IB as determined through USHE major committees) will automatically articulate to fulfill general education course requirements at USU.

Students completing courses with USHE general education designations are held harmless in transfer and will not lose general education credit. As always, students must confirm with their transfer institution how general education credits earned will apply to majors and as prerequisites.

The Center for Civic Excellence will actively keep other state institutions aware of general education reform at USU to ensure understanding and transferability via the USHE General Education Council and Council of Registrars.

Shield Halved Students Are Protected

  • CIVC courses transfer automatically to all USHE institutions
  • Students will not lose general education credit in transfer
  • AP, ACT, SAT, and IB credits articulate per USHE major committee determinations
  • Governed by USHE Policies R470 and R471

Transfer and Articulation outside of Utah

For students transferring to institutions outside of the USHE system, course articulation (including CIVC prefix courses) is not governed by a single statewide framework. Instead, equivalencies are determined individually by each receiving institution.

CIVC course descriptions and posted sample syllabi provide support to those making articulation decisions. Students transferring to USU from outside the USHE system will continue to have their general education classes evaluated individually by faculty experts and given credit for CIVC courses where appropriate.

USHE Policy R470 guidelines and learning outcomes inform transfer decisions, and those making articulation decisions should always keep the best interest of the transferring student in mind.
