General education is a distinct, independent academic program of study with long-standing course and program-level learning outcomes. The purpose of the general education curriculum is to provide intellectual and practical skills, knowledge of human cultures and the natural and physical world, personal and social responsibility, and integrative learning.
However, many students are looking for a major or additional academic credentials while taking general education courses. To more effectively help students toward this end and to support programs that students primarily discover after they have arrived at USU, the Civic Center is committed to facilitating the exploration of majors and additional coursework within its curriculum, and aims to accomplish this in the following ways:
- Facilitate the creation of major exploration modules for academic programs that will be embedded into general education courses.
- Host a major fair (in cooperation with academic colleges) for each general education designation area (e.g., BSS) that students attend for course credit.
- Provide students with information about “What’s Next” classes in various academic programs connected to the content of general education courses.
In these ways, the Center for Civic Excellence:
- Establishes and delivers general education as a distinct program.
- Provides extensive in-class support for students who are seeking an academic home.
- Significantly expands students’ understanding of and interaction with all academic programs.
