The Center for Civic Excellence is pleased to announce recipients of the inaugural Norm Jones Excellence in General Education Award at Utah State University. These faculty members exemplify excellence in teaching and have made lasting contributions to the USU’ general education program.
Social Sciences: Jennifer Grewe
Dr. Jennifer Grewe, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology since 2011, has made a lasting impact through both her instruction in PSY 1010: General Psychology and her leadership as Program Director of USU’s first-year experience program, Connections. Her commitment to providing first-year students with a positive and meaningful experience has had an enduring impact on student achievement.

Life Sciences: Marlene Graf
Marlene Graf is recognized for her exceptional contributions to NDFS 1020: The Science and Application of Human Nutrition. Over her 20 years at Utah State, she has taught in-person, online, and hybrid sections while also developing course materials and instructional resources used by fellow instructors.

Humanities: Brittany Gentry
Since 2021, Brittany Gentry has taught PHIL 1000: Introduction to Philosophy at Utah State, where she is known for creating classroom environments that encourage curiosity, discussion, and independent thinking. Through her thoughtful approach to teaching, she empowers students to engage deeply with ideas while developing confidence in their own perspectives and abilities as learners.

Creative Arts: David Anderson
Over his more than three decades at Utah State, David has inspired hundreds of students through his teaching in the Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning Department. His general education course, LAEP 1030: Introduction to Landscape Architecture, not only provides an introduction to the field, but cultivates creativity and critical thinking among students.

Quantitative Literacy: Hannah Lewis
Since joining the USU faculty in 2009, Dr. Hannah Lewis has distinguished herself as an exceptional lecturer, curriculum developer, and Assistant Department Head across statewide campuses. Through her leadership and dedication to student success, she has strengthened quantitative literacy education while supporting both students and faculty throughout the university community.

Physical Sciences: Missy Kofoed
Dr. Missy Kofoed has made a remarkable impact on students through her teaching, mentorship, and service in the Department of Biochemistry. Through courses such as CHEM 1010: Introduction to Chemistry and her work on the PASS Faculty Advisory Committee, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to student achievement and meaningful general education experiences.
