Interior Architecture and Design

About This Degree

The Interior Architecture and Design program at Utah State University is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the first in the state to gain this recognition, and has a solid reputation for winning national and international design competitions.

The Bachelor's of Interior Design degree (BID) is a four-year degree and students complete 120 semester credits. In this highly competitive technical program students must pass a first-year portfolio review to gain admission and complete a second-year review to continue in the program.

A minimum six-week internship is required during the summer of the third year, and students have the opportunity to pass the LEED Green Associate exam, before graduating with a Bachelor of Interior Architecture and Design degree.

What You Will Learn

Our faculty are experts at preparing interior designers for professional success. Students are provided with numerous experiences to help them acquire and hone their design skills, and each year we bring internationally renowned designers and architects to campus to work with our students. National and international study opportunities to significant design venues and historical sites are also provided.

Students are active in professional associations including ASID, IIDA, and USGBC. Students may also desire continue their studies in architecture and apply for a graduate program that best fits their goals. Our graduates enter the job market with real-world experience, go on to successful careers, and become leaders in the design profession.

Admission Requirements

In addition to Utah State University’s admissions requirements, the interior architecture and design program has additional requirements:

First-Year students: First-Year students admitted to USU in good standing qualify for admission as pre-program students. First-Year students are encouraged to make an appointment with an academic advisor early to verify they are on track for the program and understand the admission process. They will follow the 4-year plan as outlined in the USU Catalog. Go to catalog.usu.edu. Click on Caine College of the Arts. First-Year students will submit a portfolio in November of their first fall semester for admittance to the Interior Architecture and Design program. The portfolio consists of work completed in first semester classes. Students should be prepared for a competitive portfolio process and admittance is not guaranteed.
Transfer Students: Transfer students from other institutions and students transferring from other USU majors are required to have a GPA of 2.75 and will start as a pre-program interior design student. Pre-program students will take a series of required classes and will follow the 4-year plan as outlined in the USU Catalog. In fall semester, students will submit a portfolio that is based on the work they do in these classes. It is a competitive portfolio process and admittance is not guaranteed. Interior Design credits from other institutions are not accepted. It is a four-year program, starting in a fall semester, even for transfer students. Students interested in transferring to the Interior Architecture and Design program are encouraged to make an appointment with an academic advisor.

International students have additional admissions requirements.

Program Requirements

Students entering sophomore-level interior design courses must have their own laptop computer. Specifications for the laptop will be provided by the program, and required software will be made available through a special leasing program.

Students must participate in an internship before graduation. This internship is an extensive, real-world learning experience that most students complete during the summer of their junior year.
